Getting first page rankings in Google doesn’t happen by accident. It takes “on-page” search engine optimization (SEO). In fact, there is a very deliberate and researched method to use when applying on-page SEO to a website. And there is a big advantage to doing it … actually two big advantages.
- Most websites are not optimized.
- It is easy to out SEO your competition (see #1 above).
Step one: Choose your Keywords
Keywords are search terms. If you are a carpenter your keywords may be “Fairbanks carpenter”, “contractors in Fairbanks” and “Fairbanks home builder”.
Step two: Place the Keywords in your MetaData.
The most important places to put your keywords are in your page title (what shows in the tab of your browser), your page description (what shows in the Google search results) and your permalink (the pages URL). This is how it looks in Google search results.
Here are two plugins I recommend to help you do this:
Step three: Put keywords in your content
The main heading of a web page is call an “H1 tag”. Google loves H1 tags. So, when you add the main heading to your site, make it an H1 tag that has a key word in it. For example, here is an H1 heading:
Alaska SEO & Website Design
Great heading with multiple keywords!
If you are a contractor your H1 could be, “Fairbanks Carpenter and Home Builder”. Do you get the picture?
Next, go over the content on your webpage and start adding the keywords you want to rank for in the paragraphs. But be careful… Google knows when you are planting keywords and they will penalize your search rankings. So be sure to keep it natural.
Step four: Resubmit your sitemap (optional)
Remember in the last email I said it was really smart to connect to Google Search Console. Well now is the time to use. Just login to the search console and resubmit your sitemap so Google will crawl it again. If you forget to do this, it’s no big deal. Google will eventually get back to your site and update your listing.
Well, that is the basics of SEO. There is a lot more to it (and it gets pretty technical), but just doing the above will put you ahead of the rest.
